Is it normal for my 8 month old son not to make many different sounds yet?

He can hear/see fine. And his motor skills are right on target. But he still just grunts or goes oooohhh or rolls an R. He doesn't really babble or string vowel or consonant sounds together. Is this normal? I know it is still early, but I'm just curious.
