Should I have done this?

Well, I was walking down the street today when I saw an old man. I proceeds to trip his cane and yell at him for some time. Someone must have seen me so the police arrived. I steed of admitting my guilt I ran. What I basically want to know is, should I have done this. If not, what should I do to make this right?
